Naming the Wind... Realizing Life

It's my last day on campus of my freshman year and as I sit in my last final waiting for the professor to learn how to use blackboard it finally all sinks in.

No more...(insert depressing list of everything we've all done together this year)
but so much more to come...

This year I have learned to be myself above all else. I stayed true to who I was when I could have changed. God took me through so much pain and a lot of good that although I don't know why I really needed. It's going according to plan, even if I have no idea what that is.

But this year also made me start writing and looking back I have discovered that people can be defined entirely be the things they cause. So Instead of characterizing the person whose name I need, i'll just tell you the things he caused.

First of all he caused everything, his very existence is the purpose of everything in the story.

He causes the main characters to stick together, when they are trying to leave.

His actions cause the main characters to survive multiple deadly events.

He creates the love intrest between characters

He is generally the unseen force behind all the main events and the trick for me is to make it seem like he isn't especially now that I have told all of you

Intentionally specific-less descriptions

I'm proud to announce that I have a name! not for the main two characters but its something...

I have decided it was quite moronic of me to ask for help on a project you know nothing about. So I am going to give you a setting and a brief description of the as yet unnamed project that is possessing me of late.

Setting=above in early 1600's
Ok, to get you in the right mindset of genre and story-telling-type, here are several pictures of stories you've read or watched. When smashed together these will give you some idea of the story I'm writing.

Hope that helps, Here is synopsis.

The story follows the outcome of two dying wishes that occur nowhere near each other in time or location. You follow the lives of five characters as they interact with, and change, the implications of granted wishes that they never heard (slightly misleading, sorry). Their lives are also greatly impacted by a mystical island that somehow changes every person that steps on its shore (also misleading the "island is a large sandbar in the middle of the North sea). Of these five very different individuals, there is only two who are dynamic characters. There are two love story side tales that develop with members of this group, but the main story is the coming-of-age/honoring-the-father of the youngest character.

The story ends with three wishes that echo, but do not copy, the original two. The stage is set for a sequel (the title of which is Smoke and Mirrors). The entire story takes place over the course of fifty years with one 5 year and one 17 year break.

There you have it. This entire story was invented after reading The Book of Sand also check out this Interactive Version. This is the story that gave me the idea and parts are based on it but a lot has changed since the original idea. I may share that sometime if I can find it.

HOMEWORK/HELP ME= if you can think of any names for the characters based on the last post and this one, or actual book titles shoot me your ideas!

I DON"T DO NAMES

I started to write today and stopped after almost a sentence,

Waking up to the sound of someone entering the inner room of his empty house ________ sat up.

I realized that I have no names for this book. I have one chapter written with filler names but it is a chapter in the resolution. No raising acting, the climax has occurred by now. So I just used placer names.

I really really need your help coming up with names. Here are a few descriptions, and a quote from each character any ideas will be cannibalized but credit will be given.

This character is known as the luckiest man in the world, Not going to give it away but theres a twist. He never looses at anything, ever. If this man puts his mind to it then he will succede. Heres a quote from him and a quote to precede the chapter he is introduced in.

"Without confidence people are useless."

"People who drink to drown their sorrow should be told that sorrow knows how to swim."

The older motherly character is known as un-killable. She has survived more events than anyone knows, and continues to be active even though she's in her forties when it starts and late fifties by time the action starts. Again quote from her and then quote introducing her chapter.

"Power comes not form outward motivation, but internal determination."

"A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams."
--John Barrymore

Last is the semi-main character. He is the dynamic character the only one that learns throughout the epic. He is capable of understanding things better than anyone else. He has been given a special discernment and no intro quote for him just something he says.

"Knowing everything about everyone is only impressive if you also know everything about yourself."

Also the first character I defined is the name that goes into the blank. Any ideas or questions would be awesome. Next blog will be a very cose to full description of the main character. It'll be difficult because the twist revolves around him so stay tuned and give my a while...

New Direction: Stealing from an artist.

I just read THIS...

In case you don't have time to read it all here is a brief description. THIS is a blog done by an artist; he is a poet/writer. In this particular post he gives nine pieces of advice to fellow creators. I have decided to start using them all but in particular the first and last.

First he advises us to steal... Kleptomania is a writers bread and butter. I have believed this for a long time, but scared to admit that I am a thief. The truth is there is nothing new, no one is truly inventive, everything is just a recombination of things that have been around for centuries. Don't take my word for it though just read the Bible (there will probably be continuos advocation of this).

What has been will be again,
   what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 1:9

This is what gives me the right to write! I can create something, if not new, different out of the greatness already out there.

The second part of his advice I took is the reason for the blog change. The only way to get recognition, and readers is to be online. I decided that my incessant ramblings (still visible by searching the archives) were not a very professional way to put my ideas on the World Wide Web. So I cleaned up my blog and will be making it more accessible to outsiders.

I will be posting segments of stories I am working on, and expect some useful comments and criticism from my friends, and hopefully some new readers.

Once again read THIS and if you are a writer I encourage you to get involved with an internet writing forum like ThinkWrite.

Ok, first blog of new style will be out tomorrow...

Life's, Just this Guy we know..... He's not very fun at parties.

First year of college is basically over! but wait explanation point?

Am I happy this year is over? I mean really, This year has been amazing some crazy heights and horrible lows but I don't want it to end do I?

Next year will be so different, several of my friends will be gone all first semester, we won't be freshman, Honors students only have one class together. So things are changing a bit too much for comfort...

But I am ready for this work to be over, I am ecstatic about this school year ending and exited a little about getting away from some people but for the most part I'm not looking forward to the summer break. I the epitome of mixed feelings I wish I could stay on campus with everyone there all summer without any school!

ok here are two great stumbles

Religious Implications in a Bowl of Lucky Charms

This title is not a mistake or a joke. During dinner tonight before we were interrupted by an untimely fire alarm that emptied the student center, way to slow to avoid injury in an actual fire, prompted a discussion on the symbolism of cereal. (tempted to use that as a title) so here is the theory, after I give credit to those who participated. Jacob Dale, Amanda Mawson, and Caroline Harkins.

Lucky Charms carefully and quite appropriately symbolizes the interaction of Christianity and paganism/atheism.

The marshmallow symbols we all sing about and love to eat are very plainly and quite interestingly  ancient pagan Irish symbols. The pot of gold, shooting star, blue moon, ballon, and more recently added the hour glass all coincide by these five symbols of ancient Irish pagan religions. The other "charms" are more obvious a horse shoe, four leaf clover, rainbow all of these are things thought to bring luck or actually empowered by mystical powers.

The rest of the cereal contains Christian symbols. The Icthus (aka Jesus fish),bell, and Cross symbolizing ancient christianity, modern christianity, and the entire point of christianity respectively.

So what are the implications of this?

Well the most popular, easier to swallow, "fun," gospel of atheism and paganism is represented by everyones favorite part of the cereal, Marshmallows. While christianity is symbolized by the better for you, but less tasty, and more numerous, cereal bits. This is an adequate picture of the world today.

Christianity is not easy, its not the cool thing to do. It's the most powerful, because its true. It's seen as overbearing (numerous), But its the best thing out there for you. The absence of belief is the easier route its fun, but only for a season. As emphasized by the short life of Lucky Charms only Marshmallows. This was without question the most unhealthy food ever to have existed, and probably sold more in its first week than McDonalds does in a year.

So there you have it, sunday school lesson courtesy of Lucky Charms!

If you just came for this post check out some of the others below, no I am not above advertising for myself.

Hipsters, and non-conformity

Im anti-hipster there I said it, and I really mean it.

Where does not being main-stream mean all these people get to gather and form a new culture?

I never understood how anyone could call themselves a hipster attempt to avoid anything mainstream, and then start a new counter culture where everyone against mainstream  society can come complain together. They sit around in there super expensive fake worn out, or incredibly cheap previously owned actually worn out clothes that they take very good care not to mess up. They listen to all the same music and insult everyone who's never heard of them because the bands they listen too are heard by too many people, when the bands they listen too are only listend to by the thousands of other people in their counter culture.

But these same people when met with something actually new, something random and unprecedented, they are scared. None of these so called anti-society hipsters can actually understand or accept anything that does not fit into their version of the social norm.

ok wow that was a little more ranting then I expected lol.

Heres what I wanted to say, everyone is posting lyrics to songs that have deep meaning or something so here are the two songs that have been bouncing around in my head for the last few days.

I've heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return
Well, I don't know if I believe that's true
But I know I'm who I am today
Because I knew you...

Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

Kriston Chenoweth, Wicked

AND

Leave reality outside and come along for the ride
But just remember
While you're watching us
Do the things that we do
We're watching you

I wanna make friends with the freaks
I wanna throw down with the clowns that I meet
I wanna have a party in the middle of the street
I wanna have a party in the middle of the street
I wanna have a party in the middle of the street
Invite all the carnies and the crazy acrobats
And bearded ladies and the fire-breathers
All the people just like me

Plain White T's
